Eugene C. Ommert, 84, residing in Huron, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013, in Firelands Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born on June 10, 1928, in Sandusky, to Claude Ommert and Hildagard (Werner) Ommert.
Eugene was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving as a pilot during the Korean War. He retired from New Departure Hyatt after many years. Eugene was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sandusky, and U.A.W. Local 913. In his spare time he enjoyed farming, reading, flying his airplane, traveling, boating and spending time with his family and friends.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Margaret (Schenk), whom he married July 25, 1958, two daughters; Candie Ommert-Doerner of Huron, and Peggy (Chris) Senanayake of Brookfield, Conn.; one son, Kevin (Belinda) Ommert of Huron; five grandchildren, Christopher Doerner, Amanda Senanayake, Sarah Ommert, Brandy Ommert, and Kyle Ommert; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Groff Funeral Home and Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave. Sandusky. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 17, at the funeral home. Pastor Bill Halvin, of St. John’s Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
