John Laurence Clark, 56, of Huron, Friday, died May 3, 2013, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was born July 2, 1956, in Hartford, Conn., and lived in Greenfield, Mass., Madison, Wis. and Oxford, Ohio, before moving to Huron.
John graduated from Talawanda High School in Oxford and received a BA degree in Theater and Communication from Bowling Green State University. For two years, he put his dramatic talents to use, traveling through much of the United States performing with the Covenant Players.
In 1981, John and Cynthia A. Schweiger were married, beginning a 31-year marriage blessed with exceptional devotion and love for each other and for their children, Jennifer, Matthew and Jonathan.
John received a master’s degree in college student personnel service from Miami University in 1995 and became career services coordinator at BGSU Firelands. Working with students was the most fulfilling part of his job. He was especially sensitive to the unique challenges of non-traditional and veteran students and extended exceptional efforts to ensure their success at the college. His creation of the “Career Doctor” persona and his role in identifying internships and job opportunities for BGSU Firelands students benefited hundreds. John’s contributions to the college were appreciated and applauded on a regular basis by both employees and students. He received the Dean’s Special Recognition Award in 2011 and the Distinguished Part-Time Teacher award in 2004.
John also was an active member of the Huron community, serving for many years on the Chamber of Commerce, including serving as president of the chamber. He worked with local youth groups, and the youth of Team Challenge in Sandusky. He was an active participant for 12 years in the Search for the Christ Child. He volunteered at his local church, The Chapel Sandusky, in the prayer ministry as well as Food for the Poor.
In addition to his wife and children, John will be greatly missed by his mother, Constance Wilkins; his stepfather, Heanon Wilkins; and all of his extended family.
Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 10, at The Chapel, 4444 Galloway Road, Sandusky, where services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11. The Rev. Dave Brown will officiate. Burial will be private at Scott Cemetery, Huron.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to endow a scholarship in John’s name. Gifts may be directed to the BGSU Foundation, Mileti Alumni Center, Bowling Green, OH 43403, indicating on the memo line “In Memory of John Clark.”
