August Harry Speer, 92, residing at the Ohio Veteran’s Home died Wednesday April 17, 2013.
He was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Sandusky, son of the late Andrew and Magdaline (Bing) Speer. He was a 1938 graduate of Sandusky High School, and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943-46. He was a truck driver for more than 43 years in Sandusky.
He was a founding member of the Perkins Fire Department, where he was assistant chief for 33 years, retiring in 1983. In his early years, he was a semi-pro baseball player for the Ohio Soldiers and Sailor’s Home.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, and attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan, and followed local sporting events around Sandusky. He was a life long farmer, and a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his sons, Stephen (Terry Canino) Speer, and Gene Speer, of Sandusky; grandchildren, Amanda (Aaron) Dubbert, Andrea (Kyle) Morrow, Andrew (Beth) Speer, and Alan Speer; great-grandchildren, Devin, Davis, Dessa, Kendall, Kaylee, and twins, Jameson and Aiden.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Ann (Conley) Speer in 2001, also four brothers and a sister.
Friends may call 3-8 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Pfeil Funeral, 617 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, and from 9 a.m. Saturday, April 10, until a service at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. A funeral procession will follow with Fire Department honors, and burial at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
