Melvin White, 75, of Sandusky, transitioned on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013, in Stein Hospice Care Center.
Melvin was born June 22, 1937, son of the late Robert and Harriet (Nelson) White. He was one of 12 children born to this union. He was a 1956 graduate of Sandusky High School, and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mel was employed for many years by both Peter Echrich and Sons Company and Sandusky Plastics Company.
In his spare time he volunteered through Serving Our Seniors as a Meals on Wheels driver. Mel’s true passion in life was coaching his baseball team, “Cliff’s Grocery,” for Sandusky Eagles Atom League for more than 30 years. An avid sports enthusiast, Mel loved all of the Ohio sports teams. Many days and evenings were spent sharing this passion with his wife during their later retirement years.
Melvin is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara (Adams), whom he married Aug. 31, 1963; his two children, Julliard Marie (Dwayne) Morris and Damon Vincent White; two brothers, Franklin (Willa) and Waudell (Sarah) White; two sisters, Phyllis (Paul) Morris and Lurlay Mills; six grandchildren, Iesha, Shaquille, Zhane, Khalil, Marquay and Tahzon White; former daughter-in-law, Lynette White; special cousins, Frankie and Charlie Byrd, whose personal sacrifice over the years will never be forgotten by the family; many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Including his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his five brothers, Wilbert, Danny, Scllee, Frederick and Levi White; and two sisters, Shirley Jamison and Marilyn White.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 8, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Pastor Albert E. Porter will officiate.
