Retha Martin, 68, of Berlin Heights, passed away at home early Thursday morning, March 28, 2013.

She is survived by three of her children, Oshel Cloward, Sabrina Wright and Shane (Becky) Martin; her 10 grandchildren, Amber, Shane, Dylan, Austin, Madison, Angie, Landon, Travis, Jacob and Kaleb. She had five great-grandchildren, J.W., Pipper, Kendal, Antonette and Silas.

Retha was born Aug. 27, 1944, in Washington Courthouse, Ohio. She was a certified hypnotherapist from the Cincinnati School of Hypnosis, and a Silva graduate. She was the founder of the Retha J. Martin School of Personal Growth in Berlin Heights. She instructed self-hypnosis and other modalities of hypnosis through the continuing education departments of several colleges. She appeared on her own weekly television show “Complimentary Care” which consisted of more than 500 episodes, teaching the benefits of hypnotherapy. She specialized in the practice of hypnotherapy for positive behavioral changes in children, but worked with all groups.

Retha served as the first national director of the International Hypnosis Hall of Fame Guild Inc., and in 1994 was honored with the Woman of the Year Award. She was inducted into the Hypnosis Hall of Fame Guild Inc. in 1996. She was a board member of the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association and received from them the Teamwork Award and their highest award, the Life Diplomat in Hypnotherapy (year 2,000). She also received the Hypnotist of the Year Award from the Mid-American Hypnosis Conference. She also has been listed in the “World’s Who’s Who of Women.” She received Congressional recognition for her work in hypnotherapy.

Retha enjoyed making rugs for her friends and family, she was an avid reader with a wide range of interests including – self-help books, mysteries, educational, and anything relating to her field of hypnotherapy. One of her many joys was helping others find their true self. She had many quotes; these are just a few, “What’s your word for today?” “There is gold dust in the air.” “This is the best day of my life up to this point in time!”

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Martin; her son, Ricky Cloward; and her parents, Oshel and Martha Travis.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7- 9 p.m. Monday, April 1, at Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron, where a service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, followed by a lunch at the Huron Eagles, Cleveland Road, Huron.
