Robert N. Hughes, 91, of Sandusky, passed away early Sunday afternoon, March 17, 2013, in Stein Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.
Robert was born May 15, 1921, in Sandusky, son of the late G. Lynn and Alma (Wott) Hughes. Robert was a 1939 graduate of Sandusky High School. He then attended e Sandusky Business College, Cleveland College, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy of the U.S. Naval Services. Robert was a proud veteran who served his country in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Robert retired in 1986 from Sandusky International after 36 years of working in the accounting department.
He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church. He served on the church council and was a member of the Senior Choir for 56 years. Robert was a past president and life member of Sandusky Lions Club (with 48 years of perfect attendance), and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award in 1993. He was a lifetime member and past president of Sandusky Jaycees, a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post 2529, a member of Commodore Dening Post 83, Sandusky American Legion, National Assn. of Clock & Watch Collectors, the United States Power Squadron, life member of the Military Officers Assn. of America, member of the LST Assn. and was a charter member of the Firelands Investors Stock Club.
Robert is survived by his three daughters, Mary Foland, of Sandusky, Betsy (Tom) Dupler, of Sandusky, and Barbara (Bob) Gilbert, of Massillon, Ohio; his son, Richard Hughes, of Norwalk; eight grandchildren, Barbie, Michael, Marti, Angie, Nathan, Brandon, Jennifer and Stephanie; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Geraldine (Groscost) Hughes; his parents; and one brother, Clyde L. Hughes.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, until the service at 1 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Pastors John Mawhirter and Dan Miller will co-officiate. Private burial will take place Friday, March 22, at Oakland Cemetery. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, Sandusky is handling arrangements.
