Anna S. (Hess) Riedel, 102, of Pendleton, Ind., passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013, in St. Vincent hospital in Anderson, Ind., following a sudden illness.
Anna was born Aug. 26, 1910, in Hessen, Germany. She and her husband Karl Riedel immigrated to Sandusky through Ellis Island in 1933. In the 1930s she worked at Vogel’s in Sandusky, but her life’s work was supporting her husband, an architect, contractor and small business owner. Karl was co-founder of Sandusky Lumber Company and Sandusky Cement Company and he built many homes and businesses in the Sandusky area. Karl and Anna were instrumental in developing the Cedar Cove Allotment and the Karl Ann and Stahlwood Drive areas. She lived in Sandusky until moving to Pendleton in 1997 following the death of her husband and son.
She was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sandusky.
Anna is survived by her grandson, Karl-Heinz (Diane) Riedel III, of Huron; granddaughters, Tanya (Kevin) Weston, of Pendleton, and Heidi Riedel, of Sandusky; one great-grandson; four great-granddaughters; two stepgreat-grandsons; two great-great-grandsons; and two great-great-granddaughters.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Karl Riedel, in 1996, and son, Karl-Heinz Riedel, in 1997.
She will be greatly missed by the many members of her family and the friends whose lives she touched during her long life with her gentle strength and compassion.
Family services will take place, with burial in Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the donor’s favorite charity.
