Princess Purita Rasul Roth, a member of the royal family of the Sultan of Sulu, was born March 27, 1919, in Jolo, Sulu, Philippine Islands, and passed away peacefully Thursday, March 7, 2013 of natural causes in her home in Charlemont, Mass.
Princess Purita (a direct descendent of the prophet Mohammed, S.A.W.) was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leo F. Roth. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Princess Hadji Salma Rasul (niece of Queen Dayang Dayang) and her father, Hadji Butu Rasul (Prime Minister to the Sultan of Sulu and negotiator of the treaty with the United States to form the present day Philippine Islands).
She is survived by her daughter, Nonie (Mark) Hinspeter; her son, R. Abdul Baki (Anne Kaplan) Roth; three grandchildren, Michael (Rene) Beck, Matthew Beck and Jamila Roth; and two great-grandchildren, Fallon and Keagan Beck. She is also survived by a large circle of loving family and friends.
After leaving the Philippines in 1946, Princess Purita and her husband Leo settled in Sandusky and raised their family.
She was an active member of the War Brides Club, Better Mother’s Club, Grace Episcopal Church, Sandusky Yacht Club and PBCC to name a few. She was an avid bridge player, a wonderful dancer and a fun-loving golfer. She and her husband lived on Marco Island and in Naples, Fla., before moving to Massachusetts. Her love and enthusiasm for the American Dream would be an inspiration to many. If Princess Purita were a sound, she would be a laugh and she would touch everyone and try to make them smile.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will take place at a later date.
