Richard J.A. Hemmer, 90, of Sandusky, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, in Ohio Veterans Home.
He was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Sandusky, and was a U.S Army veteran, serving in WWII. He was employed by New Departure Hyatt for 33 years, retiring in 1979.
Richard was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, life member of American Legion Post 83, AMVETS Post 17, VFW Post 2529 and the Disabled Vets. He was an avid fisherman, carpenter, building his own house, wintered in Fort Myers, Fla., and loved to travel around the U.S.
He is survived by his children, Dennis L. (Pamela) Hemmer, of Gallatin, Tenn., Martha J. (David) Custis, of Newburgh, Ind., and Sherry A. (Kenneth) Beucler, Curtice, Ohio; grandchildren, Caitlin Hemmer, Sarah (Frank) Kunf, Grace (John) Herl, Jara (JT) Dillingham, Carrie (Tony) Roby and Nathan (Erin) Beucler; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth M. (Poths) Hemmer in 2007; parents, Gustav and Alma (Ahlers) Hemmer; sisters, Dorothy Dahm and Margaret Russell, and a brother, Junior Hemmer.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2211 Mill St., Sandusky, and from 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 9, until funeral services at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The Rev. Alan R. Swartz will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron, with American Legion Post 83 Color Guard providing a military tribute.
