Richard J. Wechter, 74, of Sandusky, passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 25, 2013, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 16, 1938, in Norwalk, son of the late Anthony "Tony" Franklin and Margaret Evelyn (McDonald) Wechter. He was a 1956 graduate of Monroeville High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Richard worked in advertising at the Sandusky Register for more than 40 years, retiring in 2006.
He enjoyed woodworking, working in his yard and gardening, watching NASCAR races and in his earlier days, riding his motorcycle. He was a member of American Legion Post 83.
Richard is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jacquelyn Y. (Keller) Wechter; a son, Eric (Angel) Wechter, of Huron; three daughters, Aimee (Don) Thomas, of New Lebanon, Jennifer (Joe) Grant, of Newport, N.C., and Andrea Prophet, of Clarksville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; stepson, John Spoa Jr., of Dublin Ohio; two step-grandchildren; sister, Marnie Wechter, of Neptune Beach, Fla.; brother, Larry (Carol) Wechter, of Costa Grande, Ariz.; his beloved dog, Katie; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he also was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Wechter; and a sister in infancy, Janet.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at David F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, and from 9 a.m. Friday March 1, until funeral services at 10 a.m. at Faith Memorial Church, 1320 E. Strub Road, Sandusky. The Rev. Kenneth Hiser will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 83 Color Guard.
