Eileen M. Popke, 88, Monroeville, died early Friday morning, May 14, 2010, in Stein Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.
She was born March 31, 1922, in Kipton, Ohio, daughter of the late Joseph W. Florence B. (Hoy) Meyer. She was a 1940 graduate of Bellevue High School. Eileen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sandusky. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Popke Jr., whom she married Aug. 23, 1941; daughters, Kareen (Joseph) Voight of Norwalk, Cheryl (Johan "Bud") Winfield of Lorain and Catherine (John) Hasenflue of Vermilion; sons, Gary L. (Elaine) Popke of Sandusky, Charles (Brenda) Popke III of Sanford, N.C., Michael Popke of Monroeville, Kenneth (Patty) Popke of Garner, N.C., and Craig Popke of Mansfield; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Dorothy Riedy of Norwalk, Doris Ovall of Oregon, Ohio, Vivian (Harold) Jett of Clyde, Shirley Cook of New Mexico and Phyllis Howard of Oregon; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Joseph and Paul Popke; parents; brothers, Wilbur and Gordon Meyer; and two sisters, Evelyn Gilum and Marjorie Rhodes.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Sunday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky; rosary services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Prayers will be recited at 9 a.m. Monday in the funeral home followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky; The Rev. David Nuss will officiate. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
