Mary I. Trautman, 88, of Norwalk died Thursday afternoon, May 13, 2010, in Norwalk Memorial Home.
She was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Monroeville, Ohio, daughter of the late Ralph A. and Mary I. (Brooks) Gfell. She lived in the Sandusky and Norwalk areas most of her life, excluding the eight years from 1974-82 she spent in Chicago with her husband. Mary was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and was also a member of Firelands Post 2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Ken Bur Bell Post 41 American Legion Auxiliary. She and her husband, Cliff, enjoyed stock car racing. Mary drove in many races winning at Norwalk Raceway, Daytona Raceway, Bristol (Tennessee) Raceway, Atlanta Raceway and other tracks in Ohio and Indiana and was one of the first women race car drivers. Her real passion in life, however, was being a wife, mother and grandmother.
Mary is survived by her husband of 70 years, Clifford T. Trautman of Norwalk; her son and daughter-in-law, Dale J. and Carol Trautman of Norwalk; daughter-in-law, Gretchen (Trautman) and Bill Landoll of Norwalk; her grandchildren, Julee and Rick Fries, Lisa and Patrick Schultz, Lori and Randy Wheeler, and Joseph and Carla Trautman; 11 great grandchildren; and by her sister, Alice Augustine of Mansfield, Ohio.
Mary was preceded in death by her son, Clifford Thomas "Tom" Trautman Jr. in 1972; brothers, Arnold and Robert Gfell; and sisters, Gladys, Polly, Lucille, Louise and Leona.
Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Sunday in Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk, where prayer services will be at 3:30 p.m. Memorial Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main Street, Norwalk; the Rev. Eric Mueller will officiate.
