Michael J. Close, 70, an attorney and CEO of Balmer Parc LLC, a real estate management company, passed away late Thursday evening, Feb. 7, 2013, in Key Biscayne, Fla., after suffering a heart attack.
Formerly of Greenwich, Conn., Michael and his wife, Nancy, traveled between their home in Sarasota, Fla., and New York City.
He was born Jan. 24, 1943, in Sandusky, to Robert J. Close, also an attorney, and Mary Lee Graefe Close. He received a BA from Lafayette College, where he was president of his fraternity, Theta Chi, and a J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review. He practiced law with Dewey Ballantine from 1968 until 1996, as a senior tax partner. Michael later served as president and CEO of Balmer Parc LLC, as well as a trustee of the Esther M. Mertz Trust. He also held positions on the boards of the First Citizens Banc Corp. of Sandusky, and the Asolo Repertory Theater of Sarasota.
In addition to his beloved wife, Nancy, he is survived by daughter, Christie and her husband, Charles Batchelor; daughter, Karen and her fiancé, Christopher Clarke; grandson, Benjamin; brother, David; and sisters, Stephanie and Candace.
Visitation was held Monday, Feb. 11, in Sarasota. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Ave., New York. All are welcome to attend.
His family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in his memory to either of two charities very dear to Michael; the Bluefish Boosters, Inc. (bluefishswimclub.com) or The Heritage Foundation (heritage.org).
