Eleanor Mary (Schumert) Happel, 91, of Sandusky passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010, in Stein Hospice in Sandusky.
She was born March 29, 1918, in Pittsburgh, Calif. Eleanor grew up in Webster Groves, Mo. She married Dr. Robert Happel, an Eden Theological Seminary graduate, Nov. 11, 1941. Together they served their first church in Cottage Grove, Minn., then later moved to Glencoe, Minn., where their four children were born. They moved to Parma Heights, Ohio, in 1956 where Robert served the United Church of Christ Homeland Ministries. In 1966, the family settled in Amherst when Robert became the pastor for St. Peter’s United Church of Christ.
Eleanor was employed as a church secretary at the First Congregational Church in Elyria and then at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. Upon retirement, the couple moved to Lorain, then to The Community at Parkvue Place in Sandusky where Eleanor served on the residents’ board.
Eleanor volunteered at Ohio Veterans’ Home, Parkvue Healthcare Center, and American Red Cross. She delivered lunches for Meals on Wheels. Eleanor enjoyed knitting scarves and hats to donate to needy children. She sewed nearly 50 baby quilts, donating them through Care and Share. In 1999, Eleanor received the Ben Herpster Award recognizing her volunteer work. In 2009, Medical Mutual of Ohio recognized Eleanor as a Statewide Outstanding Senior Volunteer, honorable mention.
Eleanor leaves to cherish her memory four children, Dr. Richard (Mary Ellen) Happel of Grand Rapids, Mich., Barbara (Ric) Pamer of Macedonia, Ohio, Elizabeth (Brian) Dermid of Gretna, La., and David (Faye) of Vermilion; grandchildren, Heather Evans, Sara Hansen, Seth Happel, Evan Pamer and Mallory King; four great-grandchildren, David Lancaster Jr., Brendyn Evans, and Logan and Erica Hansen; and close family friends, John and Debbie Kasper, and Kyle and Patty Heiland. Eleanor is also survived by her brother, Robert Schumert; and sister, Martha Shreiber, both of St. Louis.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Happel; parents, Charles and Martha (Stauf) Schumert; and brother, Charles Schumert.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. A private funeral service will be led by the Rev. Herbert Reichert. Burial will be in Ridgehill Memorial Park in Amherst Twp.
