Robert C. Rengel Sr., a fourth generation native and life-long resident of Sandusky, was 86 years old when he crossed over to God on Saturday, Feb., 16, 2013, in Providence Care Center with his wife at his side after valiantly battling leukemia for nearly three years.
Bob was born Oct. 29, 1926, to Carl E. Rengel and Ada Mae (Brockley) Rengel, now deceased.
Bob served as a helmsman in the U.S. Navy during WW II and worked at Apex before starting Rengel Brothers Construction Co. in 1956 with his brother, David.
He was married to his life long companion, LaDonna (Riesterer) Rengel for nearly 65 years.
Bob was an active member of Holy Angels Church where he served as an usher for more than 20 years. He was also a life member of AMVETS and a member of the American Legion. In later life, he delighted in telling his grandchildren about his war experiences and recently took an Honor Flight to see the WW II Memorial in Washington, D.C. He was avid outdoorsman and thoroughly enjoyed the water and fishing since getting his first boat at age 14.
Bob is survived by his wife, LaDonna; along with four children, Robert C. (Kathleen) Rengel Jr., Linda (John) Van Tine and Jeffery (Judith) Rengel, all of Sandusky, and Patrick (Diedre) Rengel, of Plain City, Ohio. Bob is survived by nine grandchildren, Robert, Scott, Kyle, Tayler, Jillian, Jennings, Keegan, Kailee and Carson Rengel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary, age 3, and one grandson, Christopher.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at David F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Liturgical services will be at 6:45 pm. Prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 428 Tiffin Ave., Sandusky. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 83 Color Guard.
