Raymond Behnke, 90, of Sandusky, passed away on Monday morning, Feb. 4, 2013, in the Erie County Care Facility, Huron.
He was born in Sandusky on Jan. 31, 1923, and was a member of the Merchant Marines. He was employed by Eastern States Farmers Exchange, and retired from the City of Sandusky as a building inspector in 1985.
Raymond was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sandusky Eagles, and life member of the V.F.W. Post 2529. He loved to needlepoint and travel with his wife, Mary. One of his many achievements was the building of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
He is survived by his daughters, Judy (Ronald) Biby of Sandusky, and Patricia (George) Paterson of Minneapolis; son, Thomas (Sheila) Behnke of Sandusky; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce Ricci of Huron; brother, Allen Behnke of Michigan; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise (Jensen) Behnke, on March 9, 2012; parents, Raymond T. and Verna A. (Palmer) Behnke; daughter, Sharon, in infancy; granddaughter, Amy Behnke; and brothers, Don Behnke and Douglas Behnke.
Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the funeral home, with Mel Sayler, Chaplain for Stein Hospice, officiating.
