Michael J. Kresser, 72, residing in Sandusky, passed away early Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2013, in Stein Hospice Care Center, after a lengthy illness.
Mike was born Sept. 1, 1940, in Sandusky, son of the late Arthur F. and Margaret “Peg” (Burton) Kresser.
He was a 1958 graduate of St. Mary Central Catholic High School. He was a Army National Guard veteran, serving his country from 1963-67.
He was the owner and operator of many successful businesses in Sandusky, most notably Michael J’s Restaurant, until his retirement in 1997. Upon his retirement, Mike worked part time for Kasper Transportation.
Mike was especially proud of his service to the Sandusky Community as an officer for the Sandusky Police Department from April 16, 1964 until Nov. 30, 1967. Mike continued his service to Sandusky as a member of the Sandusky City Commission from 1986-93 serving as president of the commission from 1988-91. He was re-elected to serve on the commission 1998-2005, where he was president of the Sandusky City Commission from 2001-04.
Mike was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sandusky, AMVETS Post 17, American Legion Post 83, the Remember Cruisin’ Car Club, the Car Coddlers, and he was a co-founder of the original Cruisin’ By the Bay Car Show.
In his spare time, Mike enjoyed classic cars, watching his grandchildren play sports, coaching his children’s sports teams, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Mike is survived by Barbara (Hoelzer), his wife of 50 years; his three children, Kurt (Kelly) Kresser, Chad (Amy) Kresser and Marcy (Jerry) Baum, all of Sandusky; grandchildren, Jordan, Clayton, Ayden, Brinden, Madison and Gavin; his sister, Susan (Bill) Chaney, of Lakeside; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Including his parents Mike, was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Jordan, and his brothers-in-law, Wally Canino and Bob Scally.
Friends may call 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Eric Mueller will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
