Rev. Elmer C. Novak

Rev. Elmer C. Novak, age 75, of Sandusky, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, in his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Nov. 23, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio. 

He graduated from Defiance College in 1963 with a bachelor's degree, and received a Bachelor of Divinity and a Master of Sacred Theology from Vanderbilt University in 1967. He was ordained at Archwood Avenue United Church of Christ in Cleveland, June of 1967. He served churches in Pittsfield, Avon Lake and Lakewood before becoming pastor of St. Stephen United Church of Christ, Sandusky in 1972. He served on many committees for the NW Ohio Association of the U.C.C. including president of the Ohio Conference in 1982. Retiring from St. Stephen in 2000, Pastor Novak then served the First Presbyterian Church and Emmanuel U.C.C., both of Sandusky. 

He enjoyed learning to play the guitar and the bass with the Singara Grotto Group and the Singara Notes. He served on various community boards throughout the years, and was active with the Board of Care and Share. He was a 37 year member of Perseverance Lodge 329 Free & Accepted Masons, member and past Monarch of Singara Grotto M.O.V.P.E.R, member and past President of Sandusky High Twelve Club, member of Sandusky City Chapter 72 Royal Arch Masons, member of Sandusky City Council 26 Royal and Select Masons, member and past Recorder of Erie Commandery 23 Knights Templar, and a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth (Paddock) Novak; daughters, Bethany (Michael) Stipp, and Michelle (Jerald) Johnson; son, Benjamin Novak; four grandchildren, Jonathon and Katherine Stipp, and Henry and Anthony Garcia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Elizabeth (Mehok) Novak; brothers, Ronald and John Novak; and sister, Betty June Sadey.

Celebration of Life services will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. Stephen United Church of Christ, 905 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Visitation will be 10 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m. The Rev. Jerry Fenske will officiate.
