John Richard Schemmer 89, of Sandusky passed away Friday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2013, in Firelands Regional Medical Center.
John was born Oct. 20, 1923, in Sandusky, son of the late Charles and Mary Anna (Rettinger) Schemmer. John was a 1941 graduate of St. Mary Central Catholic High School.
John served in The U.S. Navy from 1941-45 and attended Bliss Electrical School in San Francisco. He was a chief petty officer, and taught sonar, radar, and electronics at Navy Pier in Chicago. In 1939 John became a licensed HAM Radio Operator W8VPY, and was a founding member of the Sandusky Radio Experimental League. He also was co-owner of Bay Electric Motor Repair Service until 1993.
John was a member of AMVETS. In his spare time he enjoyed dancing, camping, reading Louis Lamour books and spending time with his family.
John is survived by his wife Elsie (Halonen) Schemmer whom he married Dec. 15, 1945, in Evanston, Ill.; four daughters, Kathleen (Eric) Jensen, of Toledo, Virginia (Travis) Chapin, of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Cynthia (Tom) Glass and Theresa Woodburn, of Sandusky; his son, John Daniel Schemmer, of Sandusky; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Alberta Higgins of Cincinnati; and many other family members.
Including his parents, John was preceded in death by his four brothers, Charles, Edward, William and Bernard; his sister, Dorothy Fairfield; and a great-grandchild.
Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, until a prayer service at 9:30 a.m. at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Eric Mueller will officiate. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
