Thomas E. Hayes, 63, of Sandusky, passed away late Thursday morning at his home surrounded by his family on Dec. 27, 2012, after a valiant battle with kidney cancer .

He was born Sept. 16, 1949, in Sandusky, son of the late Frank W. and Winifred "Winnie" Laurene (Palmer) Hayes. He was a 1967 graduate of St. Mary Central Catholic High School. Tom retired from NASA Plumbrook Facility where he worked as an aerospace mechanic for many years. 

 He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and his grandchildren. Tom was a true "handy man" having been skilled in a variety of different trades.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he had been an usher, the Knights of Columbus, Council 546, the Erie County Right To Life and the Tea Party. 

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Rose (Mascazine) Hayes, whom he married Dec. 27, 1975; his family, Christa (Ryan) Means of Dallas, Amy Hayes, of Sandusky, Thomas C. Hayes, of Tiffin, and Laura Hayes, of Sandusky; five grandchildren; two sisters, Georgia (Patric) Dempster and Janice Hayes; brother, James M. Hayes.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Frank Hayes.

Visitation will be 2-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, at David F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where a rosary will be recited by the Knight of Columbus Council 546 at 6:30 p.m. Prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Jason Kahle will officiate. Burial will be in Calavry Cemetery.
