Sally Lucille Whinnery

Sally Lucille Whinnery, age 76, residing in Sandusky, passed away early Sunday evening, Dec. 9, 2012, in Stein Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.

Sally was born on Aug. 26, 1936, in Galesburg, Ill., to Gaylord and Helen (Duke) Coakley Sr.

Sally owned and operated Whinnery’s Play House, the Wee Care Day Care, and Cub’s Den Day Care Centers for many years before retiring from Cedar Point in May of 2012, working as the supervisor of communications where she was known as the voice of Cedar Point.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Sandusky AMVETS Post 17. Sally enjoyed collecting Precious Moments, reading, gardening and spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Sally is survived by her children, Beth (Craig) Kluding of Sandusky, Karl “Toby” Whinnery of Sandusky, Robert “Rob” Whinnery of Sandusky, Dave (Annette) Whinnery of Sandusky, John (Cindi) Whinnery of Arizona, Melissa (Scott) Schlessman of Huron; 15 grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, Jocelyn, Shannon, David, Patrick, Daniel, Samantha, Brandy, Jude, Korey, Angelica, Cloe, Michael and Jaylee; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Stuckey of Sandusky; one brother, David (Deb) Coakley of Sandusky; her special friend of many years, Charles “Bud” Mitchell; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her son, Pat Whinnery in 2009; and one brother, Gaylord “Bud” Coakley Jr..

Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 12, at Groff Funeral Home and Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Prayers will be recited 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in the funeral home, followed by a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Jason Kahle will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park Huron.
