Thomas H. “Tom” Windau, 81, of Sandusky, passed away early Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at his home.
He was born Aug. 29, 1931, in Sandusky, son of the late Leon and Agnes (Manner) Windau. He was a 1949 graduate of Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic High School and served many years in the Ohio National Guard. He was called to duty during the Korean War. He was an engineer at Ford Motor Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1988.
Tom loved to work with his hands — he was a “hammer in Hand:” type of man, which he showed by building his own home and throughout the years he built on additions and remodeled his children’s homes. In his earlier days, Tom was also a drummer for a number of local bands and played in a band with his four brothers called “The Windau Band.” He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Tom is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joyce M. (Wunder) Windau, whom he married July 5, 1952; his children, Tad (Teresa) Windau and Jo Ellen (Robert) Myer, of Sandusky, Jude (Tanya) Windau of Naples, Fla., and Jennifer Snedden of Perrysburg, Ohio; the delight of his life, his six granddaughters, Jessica (Joshua) Saks, Nicole and Michele Snedden, Emily and Katie Myer and Rachele Windau; sister, Marilyn (Charles) Smith, of Sandusky; sister-in-law, Mary Windau, of Arizona; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Richard, Joseph, James and Robert Windau; a brother and sister in infancy; son-in-law, Dr. Steve Snedden; and sister-in-law, Marlene Windau.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at David F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, followed by a Mass of Christian
Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Joseph Steinbauer will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
