Mrs. Johnnie Mae (Larry) Woodhouse, 81, of Columbus, departed this life on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012.
She was born Oct. 25, 1931, to Charles and Katie (Brown) Larry and attended school in Sandusky.
Johnnie was the first African-American registered nurse to graduate from Providence School of Nursing in 1954. As an educator and an innovator in the field of nursing, Johnnie worked at Providence Hospital where she dedicated her life to caring for others and was very active in the community and her church.
She was married to Clarence J. Woodhouse, and the union brought forth four children.
She was predeceased by daughters, Pamela Woodhouse and Baby Woodhouse; brother, Charles Larry Jr.; and sister, Grace Larry.
She is survived by her son, Clarence J. (Mary) Woodhouse II, of Columbus; daughter, Rhea A. (David) Wiggs ; grandchildren, James A. Mackie III, Sophia Wiggs, Matthew Wiggs and Olivia Wiggs; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins and dear friends.
Johnnie was a member of Second Baptist Church in Columbus.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Union Grove Baptist Church, 266 N. Champion Ave., Columbus, where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until services.
