Charles David Singler

Charles David Singler, 78, a life-long resident of Sandusky, passed away early Thursday morning, Nov. 15, 2012, at his residence following a brief illness.

Charlie was born Aug. 24, 1934, son of the late Joseph A. and Arline H. (Baker) Singler. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Mary Central Catholic High School. He was the owner of Jo-Jo’s Diner in Sandusky. Charlie began working for the Sandusky Police Department in 1964, where he worked for 27 years. In 1976, he was promoted to sergeant, and in 1980 he was promoted to captain, then in 1982 he was named as the department’s executive officer. Charlie was very involved in the police department. He served as  commander of the department’s reserve unit, and basic police training school for many years. After retiring from Sandusky’s PD, he joined and worked summers for the Cedar Point Police Department.

Mr. Singler was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, and spending time with his family. His greatest joy was being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Rita (Stieber) Singler; five children, Msgr. Charles E. Singler, of Toledo, Lisa J. (Jeff) Baier, of Sylvania, Ohio, Melinda S. (John) Eisenhauer, of Bellevue, Jeffery D. “J.D.” (Rebecca) Singler, of Huron, and Scott J. (Anne) Singler, of Sandusky; 10 grandchildren, Nicholas, Megan, Andrew, Erin, Torie, Kylie, Amanda, Ryan, Abby and  Collin; three great-grandchildren, Austin, Zell and Caitlyn; two siblings, Ann Bursik, of Las Vegas, and Susan (Frank) Link, of Sandusky; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Including his parents, Charlie is preceded in death by his two brothers, Joseph and Thomas Singler.

Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, with a 4 p.m. Rosary, and from 6-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Vigil for the Deceased at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Pre-Mass service will be  at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, in the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass, with Msgr. Charles E. Singler officiating, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Charles name may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky, St. Mary Central Catholic High School, 410 W. Jefferson St., Sandusky, or to Stein Hospice Services, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH. 44870.
