John R. Zura, 62, residing in Sandusky, passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 11, 2012, in his home with his devoted and loving wife of 42 years, Valerie Jean (Fantozzi) at his side. After ten years of bravely battling cancer, he is at peace.
He was born on April 22, 1950, on North Bass Island, to John and Geraldine (Wolfe) Zura. He was the brother of the late Donald Zura, and uncle of the late Jeremy Harlan.
John was a 1968 graduate of Sandusky High School and served two years with the U.S. Marine Corp. His service included one tour of Vietnam from 1969-1970. He also served and retired from the Army National Guard after 18 years of service.
John was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Sandusky. He worked with Tenneco Automotive Corporation, Milan, for the past 36 years. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren, playing cards with family and friends, and traditional knocking over the Christmas tree.
He will be missed, but not forgotten by his family and friends; sons, John (Christine), Joseph (Mindy); grandchildren, John Zachary, Bryanna Marie, Zane Christopher, and Dominic Robert; five sisters, Gladys Adams of Cincinnati, Ohio, Judy (Gary) Dickman of Milan, Pat (Peter) Mandrik of Huron, Geraldine (Don) Foster of Sandusky, and Deborah (Rick) Harlan of Put-in-Bay; and so many people who he had been a part of their lives and touched them by his outgoing personality, boisterous laughter, and jokester spirit that everyone loved so much.
Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins, Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at the funeral home. The Pastor Paul Atkinson of Salem United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
