Garnita Scheuerman

Garnita Scheuerman, 91, residing in Sandusky, formerly of Defiance, Ohio, passed away Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, in Stein Hospice Care Center.

She was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Continental, Ohio, daughter of Harry “Mick” and Alpha (Wilser) Kirkendall. She married Vernon Scheuerman Jan. 25, 1947, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1979. Garnita graduated from Continental High School in 1939 and attended Bowling Green State University. She graduated in 1946 from St. Rita’s Nursing School in Lima, Ohio, with a degree in nursing.

Garnita began her nursing career as a cadet at the Sioux Rosebud Indian reservation in Rosebud, S. D. She continued her career as a nurse in Paulding and Defiance Hospital. She ended her career working at Leisure Oaks nursing home.

Her success as a nurse was due to her compassion and caring. She was a good nurse and could relate to her patients’ needs. Her work as a nurse was very satisfying for her.

In addition to nursing, she loved sewing, gardening and was always proud of her roses. She had been a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Defiance, and attended Stephen United Church of Christ in Sandusky.

She leaves to cherish her memory, Kirk and Kathy Scheuerman of Palm City, Fla., Scott and Mary Jo (Scheuerman) Auble of Sandusky; three grandchildren, Kevin (Marius) Scheuerman of Norway, Keith (Jamie) Scheuerman of Stuart, Fla., Erin Auble of Miami, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Scheuerman; and many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry “Mick” and Alpha Kirkendall; brother, Paul Kirkendall; sister, Juanita Walls; her husband, Vernon Scheuerman; and her granddaughter, Kristin Auble.

Family will receive friends at 9 a.m. Sat., Nov. 10, at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, 529 Jefferson Ave., Defiance. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m., at the funeral home, with Rev. Robert Jenks officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance.
