Robert L. Orwig

Robert L. Orwig, 83, of Bellevue, passed away Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, in The Bellevue Hospital.

He was born Feb. 21, 1929, in Bellevue, son of the late David and Florence (Sindla) Orwig. He married Shirley Watson in Clyde on Oct. 6, 1949. They were married for 49 years when Shirley passed away in January of 1999.

Robert was a graduate of the former York High School, Class of 1947 where he served as class president. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was employed at Center Manufacturing Company for 44 years, retiring in 1991. 

He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Bellevue, and was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher. Robert was a member of American Legion Post 46, Bellevue, and a past president of UAW local 493. He enjoyed woodworking, watching his children’s and grandchildren’s school and sporting events, singing and playing his guitar and hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed decorating family members’ birthday cakes and was an accomplished baker. He cherished the companionship of Jeff’s golden retriever, Taylor Wags. He loved all the Cleveland professional sports teams.

He is survived by his sons, Robert (Lori) Orwig, of Bellevue, William (Georgia) Orwig, of Castalia, and Jeffrey Orwig, of Powell, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Winona Hill, of Bellevue.

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley; parents; his four brothers, David, Denver, Willard and Alvin; sisters, Irene Orwig and Violet Smith; and an infant granddaughter.

Friends will be received 4-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Foos and Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 428 Kilbourne St., Bellevue. The Rev. Diane Carter will officiate. Burial will be in York Chapel Cemetery, York Township, Sandusky County.
