Robert (Bob) D. Gardner, 81, of Norwalk, died Saturday morning, Oct. 20, 2012, in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.
He was born June 9, 1931, in Lodi, Ohio, to Brooks and Lucile (Garver) Gardner and was a Norwalk resident since 1979.
Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Norwalk, The Norwalk Elks, The Norwalk Eagles, Cuyahoga Falls Moose, Medina Masonic Lodge A&M Chapter and Commandery and American Legion Post 41. He also served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was a very proud member of the 508th Airborne Division, Flying Red Devils.
Bob worked for 31 years for A&P Grocery store until it closed, and in 1979 he founded Gardner’s Cardinal Supermarket. He worked there until his retirement in the late 1990’s. During this time he was named Progressive Grocer of the Year in 1985. He enjoyed boating, water sports and traveling. One of his greatest trips was to the Grand Canyon in 2002 when he hiked, with Laura Lee and friends, to the bottom of the canyon, stayed at Phantom Ranch, and hiked back out.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Laura Lee (Beall) Gardner; sons, Scott (Julie) Gardner, Brad Gardner and Barry Gardner, of Norwalk; nine grandchildren, Cory, Elise, Andrew, Casey, Bradley, Amy, Lauren, Todd and Luke; five great-grandchildren, Isabella, Leila, Ava, Andrew and Emerson; and sister-in-law, Jackie Ross of Toledo.
Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Charles; and grandson, Kyle in 2010.
Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk, and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday Oct. 24, at the First Presbyterian Church, 21 Firelands Blvd., Norwalk. The Rev. Adrian Doll will officiate.
