Monsignor Bertrand J. Shenk, 100, of Norwalk passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at his residence.

He was born July 27, 1912, in Delphos, Ohio, son of the late Amedeus H. Shenk and Loretta V “Laura” Fortener. He attended St. John School in Delphos and St. Joseph College in Collegeville, Ind., for preparatory seminary studies. He also attended St. Gregory Minor Seminary in Cincinnati and graduated from Mount St. Mary Seminary of the West in Norwood, Ohio. He was ordained a priest at St. Francis De Sales Cathedral in Toledo on May 22, 1937, by Bishop Karl J. Alter.

He was assigned to St. Peter Parish in Huron, Cathedral Chapel Parish in Toledo, St. Peter Parish in Mansfield and St. Joseph Parish in Fremont as an assistant pastor. In June 1955 he became pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Bryan, Ohio; in 1968 pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Fremont; 1972 pastor at St. Mary Parish in Norwalk; and concurrently St. Alphonsus Parish in Peru Township. He was assigned as the Catholic Chaplain in 1977 at Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, retiring from active ministry in March 1995.

His father, Amedeus H. Shenk, was hit by an automobile in 1917 and died in the family home the next morning. His mother, Loretta V. Fortener, raised him and his brother, Joseph Shenk, who was ordained a priest in 1934; he served the diocese until his retirement in 1978, and died in 1997. His mother remarried in 1934 to Louis H. Huber Sr. and resided in Sandusky until her death in 1981. All of his grandparents were buried from St. John Catholic Church in Delphos and buried at the parish cemetery.

He is survived by his niece and loving caregiver, Linda Huber, of Norwalk; several cousins; and many friends.

Reception of the body and vespers will begin at 4 p.m. and calling hours will follow until 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19,  at St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main St., Norwalk. Additional calling hours will be from 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, until a mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery, Norwalk.
