Myron E. “Mike” Wilk, 81, of Sandusky, died early Thursday morning, March 12, 2009, in Stein Hospice Care Center, surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.
He was born April 6, 1927, in Sandusky, the son of the late Frank and Hildred (Buchman) Wilk, He was a 1945 graduate of Sandusky High School. Mike was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific Theater on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He retired from Ohio Edison in 1989 after 42 years of employment as a lineman foreman.
Mike was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sandusky. He was also a life member of AMVETS, a member of VFW, Perseverance Lodge 329 F. & A.M., American Legion, Singara Grotto and Ohio Edison’s Men Club. He enjoyed constructing World War II ship and airplane models, golfing, reading, watching History Channel and coin collecting. He loved his dog, Sammy.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Jean (Stocker) Wilk, who he married in 1948; daughter, Pamela (John) Straziuso of Sandusky; grandchildren, BethAnn VanOrsdall and her fiancé, Kevin Utley, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Mandy, Tyler and Todd Wilk, all of South Carolina; sister, Sharon (Allen) Kidd of Sandusky; daughter-in-law, Pam Wilk of South Carolina; niece, Holly (Tony) Kidd-Brown of Sandusky; nephews, Scott and Frankie Kidd; and great-nieces and nephews, stepgranddaughters and stepgreat-granddaughters.
In addition to his parents, his son, Timothy, who died in 2001; and his grandson, Steven VanOrsdall, who died in 1997, preceded him in death.
Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Saturday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where the AMVETS will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Stein Hospice Service, Inc., the American Lung Association or the donor’s favorite charity.
