Joseph P. Henry, 87, residing in Milan, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at his residence.
Joe was born March 3, 1925, in Mansfield, Ohio, son the late Harold H. and Louise D. (Droxler) Henry. Joe was a 1943 graduate of Lakewood High School and a member of their Athletic Hall of Fame.
After graduation, he entered the Marines and proudly served his country from 1943-46, where he fought in World War II and was stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
He attended The Ohio State University and received a bachelor’s degree in business, and was a member of the Rose Bowl Football Team of 1950, as well as a member of their track team.
He was the owner and founder of Sandusky Imported Motors, vice president of Homestead Inc., and vice president of Homestead Farms. In 1955, he founded, and became president of the Growers Chemical Corporation.
He was the regional director of the International Arabian Horse Association for 10 years; a member of the Sandusky Sailing Club; the Sandusky Yacht Club; the Catawba Island Club; the U.S. Sailing Club; the OSU Varsity ‘O’ Club; and the Milan Chamber of Commerce where he received the Business of the Year Award in 2005. He was also a member of the MG Car Association of Ohio, and was the honorary chairman of the Mills Trophy Race. In his spare time Joseph enjoyed sailing, antique cars, horses, skiing, and especially spending time with his family.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeanette (Russell), whom he married Oct. 26, 1957; his daughter, Jeanette L. (Richard A. Bobel) Henry, of Milan; one grandson, Russell R. Bobel; two brothers, Harold H. Henry, of Milan, and William D. Henry, of Upper Arlington, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia H. Ward; and one grandson, William H. Bobel.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory-Milan Chapel, 1 S. Main St., Milan, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. Burial will follow in Milan Cemetery.
