Robert Dale Smith, 87, of Sandusky, passed away late Tuesday evening, Oct. 2, 2012, in Ohio Veterans Home.
Robert was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Port Clinton, son of the late Harry and Gladys (Rickner) Smith.
Robert attended school in Gypsum and was a U.S. Army veteran who proudly served our Country from 1943-45 on active duty during WWII. He worked for 30 years for Erie News/Cleveland Plain Dealer, and was self-employed for several years with his own fishing business.
In his spare time he enjoyed participating in Melody Makers, playing Bingo and cards, participating in men’s fellowship groups, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Robert is survived by his wife Aretta Jean (Gillam) Smith, whom he married Oct., 17, 1992; six daughters, Deborah (Dennis) Corbin, of Huron, and Rebekah (Edward) Dean, of Sandusky; stepdaughters, Sandy Lord, of Las Vegas, Loretta Hoppe, of Fort Worth, Texas, Karen (Gerald) Lyons, of Hollywood, Md., and Sherry (Steve) Jenkins, of New London; grandchildren, Preston Planthaber, Rozlyn Planthaber, Chris Thompson, Shawn Hoppe, Jason Jenkins, Amber Jenkins, Brendan Hoppe, Benjamin Jenkins and Kristi Battenfield; great-grandchildren, Megan Thompson, Jacob Thompson and Issabella Thompson; his sister Beverly (Tracy) Trent; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilma M. (Potts) Smith in 1991; his parents; one brother Chet Smith; one sister Edna Howey; and other family members.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, and from 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, until funeral services at 11 a.m. at Wayside Temple, 3809 Maple Ave., Castalia. Pastor Rusty Yost will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
