Mary Lee (Powe) Johnson

Mary Lee (Powe) Johnson, 81, of Sandusky, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, in Providence Care Center. 

She was born Jan. 20, 1931, in Silas, Ala., to Lewis and Cora (Washington) Powe, who preceded her in death when she was 9 years of age. She was loved and protected by several aunts and uncles, including Mary and Walter Cunningham. Before her death, Mary’s mother requested that she be raised by her aunt and uncle, Paphene and Eddie Craig. 

She married William Frank Johnson in September 1945 and relocated to Sandusky in 1950. She was employed at Deco Food Products for many years and later New Departure.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading the Bible, watching baseball games, and going on family outings. 

Mary Lee was a former member of New Jerusalem MBC under the leadership of The Rev. Fred Tucker. She united with Agape Love Ministries under Bishop Clifton T. Jones.

She is survived by six daughters, Cora L. Williams, Jeanette (Jimmie) Harvey and Helen Prophet, all of Sandusky, Willa Mae Johnson, Atlanta, Christine (Michael) Hopewell, of Clermont, Fla., and Jayne (Robert) Tinsley, of Louisville, Ky.; four sons, William “Wayne” Johnson, of Sandusky, Ira (Marlene) Johnson, of Stone Mountain, Ga., Jeff Moore, of Louisville, and Andrew Avery; 65 grandchildren; 122 great-grandchildren; 31 great-great grandchildren; two special sons, Jesse (Kathleen) Brown and Delonce “Nip” Fiske, of Sandusky; eight foster children; special sisters-in-law, Louise Johnson and Claudia Johnson, of Sandusky; nieces and nephews; special cousins that were like sisters, Mamie Pettis, Erma Turner and Annie Williams, all of Sandusky; and lifetime friends, Mary Morris, Annie Card, Aleatha Leavel, Ruby L. May, Inez Grant and Louise Rogers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Frank” Johnson, on July, 1969; son, Frank “Victor” Johnson, on Sept. 23, 2001; daughter, Priscilla Johnson, in 2004; parents; and brothers-in-law and companion, Jeff Moore Sr.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Agape Love Ministries, 4013 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where Homegoing services will be at noon Monday, Oct. 1. Bishop Clifton T. Jones Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
