Roger O. Harner, 76, a lifelong resident of New London, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, after a short battle with cancer in The Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Firelands in New London, Ohio.
He was born April 13, 1936, in New London, son to Orval R. and Virginia (Meeks) Harner. He graduated from New London High School in 1954. Roger served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957 and was stationed in Panama during the Korean War. On August of 1957 Roger married Alice Hawley and together they were blessed with three sons.
Roger passionately served over 50 years on the New London Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Assistant Chief and twenty-five years as secretary and treasurer. He was honored four times as Fireman of the Year. Roger was a member of the N.O.V.F.A. from 1968 to 2012, served on the credentials committee for over 25 years and was the parade chairman in 1981 and 2005. He was also a member of the Huron County Firefighters Association and served as president during 1990, 1998, 2000 and 2006.
Roger was the chairman of the Firelands Festival Parade for over 35 years. He was a farm team coach and was a proud supporter of New London school athletics, providing medals and plaques for many years.
Over years of dedication to his home town he received many awards including the 1998 New London Citizen of the Year, Service Beyond Self Award presented by the New London Rotary Club, New London School Friends of Education Award in 2006, New London School Outstanding Service to New London Students Award in 2007, Knights of Columbus Blue Coat of the Year award in 1990 and 1991 and Zenobia Shriners Longevity Service to Fire Department.
He worked for the former Ohio Body, Roth Manufacturing and retired in 1998 from Rankine Manufacturing.
Roger was the Millstone Hills Golf League secretary for several years. He was a volunteer marshal at Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament for more than 13 years.
Roger is survived by his two sons, Rick (Nanci) Harner and Rodney (Christia) Harner, both of New London; grandchildren, Amber and Adam Harner, both of New London and Aaron Harner, of Ropertgale, Ala.; and brother, William E. (Betty) Harner of Hayesville, Ohio. He is also survived by his companion, Joanne Bauer and her daughters.
In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; and son, Randy Harner.
Roger’s family will greet friends 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28. Burial will follow in Grove Street Cemetery with military rites and a F.O.O.L.S. service.
