Rachel L. (Evans) Proy, 93, of Sandusky, passed away early Tuesday morning, Jan. 13, 2009, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, after a lengthy illness.
She was born April 5, 1915, in Fremont. She spent most of her school years in Clyde, where she was a member of the HonorSociety, high school basketball and track teams. She moved to Sandusky in 1933 and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1934. In 1936, she graduated from the former Sandusky Business College.
She was a stenographer and bookkeeper at the former Barr Rubber Co. for many years. Mrs. Proy was active in the Boy Scout program as a Den Mother. She was a Sunday school teacher, pianist and involved in youth activities for many years.
She was the founder and former president of the Women Missionary Society andorganized the Circle Programat First Baptist Church. She was the Stewardship Chairman for North Central District BaptistConvention, member of the Council of church women inSandusky, and former president and head deaconess of Women Missionary Prayer Fellowship. She held a weekly, Tuesday morning, interdenominational prayer and praise fellowship at her home for 25 years. She has been a member of Calvary Temple for many years.
She was a lifelong avid fan of the Cleveland Indians.
She is survived by her three sons, William F. Proy of Delaware, Ohio, Robert C. (Betty) Proy of Sandusky and Gary E. (Linda) Proy of Huron; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grand-children; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Proy, in July, 1976; parents, Frank and Laura (Ferguson) Evans; threesisters, Jean Ashworth, Carol Brake and Janet Williams; brother, the Rev. Robert F. Evans, and brother in infancy, Franklin Evans.
Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Friday in David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home; Pastor J. David Snyder of Calvary Temple will be officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery,Sandusky.
