Robert William Guendelsberger, 88, of Sandusky, died, surrounded by his loving family, early Monday morning, Dec. 29, 2008, in Stein Hospice Care Center, after a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 11, 1920, in Sandusky, son of the late Aloysius and Josephine (McDermott) Guendelsberger. Bob was a 1938 graduate of St. Mary High School. He had the distinction of being inducted into SMCC Hall of Fame three times -- in 2002 as an individual; in 2000 as a member of the 1936 St. Mary Basketball Team and in 2008 (Class to be inducted on Jan. 11, 2009) as a member of the 1934 St. Mary Football Team. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WW II. Following a career as a baker in Sandusky and Findlay, he became a State Farm Insurance Agent and retired after 27 and one half years.

Bob was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a former member of the St. Mary Church Advisory Council, Sandusky Power Squadron, Knights of Columbus 546, American Legion Post 83 and VFW Post 2529. His family was his life and he enjoyed boating, fishing and his Lyman boats.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Jo Martin of Sandusky; three sons, Thomas (Christine) of Oakton, Va., Gary (Judy) of Sandusky and Richard of Charlottesville, Va.; five grandchildren, Matt (Julie) Martin, Chad (Danielle), Bryan, Emily, and Caitlin Guendelsberger; one great-granddaughter, Abbie Marie Guendelsberger; one brother, William (Anne) Guendelsberger; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Weigel) Guendelsberger, on May 10, 2008; his parents; and one brother, Arthur Guendelsberger.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. Friday in the Commons at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky, until a Mass of Christian Burial at 10a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Phil Feltman, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, is in charge of arrangements.
