Earl James  "Jim"  Langhurst, 89, of Willard, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at his home.

He was born in Willard, Feb. 12, 1919, son of the late Elmer and Susan (Miller) Langhurst. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Willard. He graduated from Willard High School in 1937 and the Ohio State University in 1941. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and owner of Langhurst Insurance Agency in Willard.

He was a member of Willard American Legion, Elks B.P.O. Lodge 1370, VFW Post 3430 and  Willard Athletic Boosters Club. He was a 32 Degree Scottish Rite-Valley of Toledo, Golden Rule Charter 167 Mason in Willard.

He was Willard's first high school state track champion, and in his junior year of football led the state in scoring with 130 points. At The Ohio State University he was a three year football letterman. As a sophomore in 1938, he was Ohio State's MVP and led the Big Ten in scoring. He was a member of the 1939 Big Ten Championship Team and elected captain in 1940.  He had a long and illustrious football officiating career highlighted by 12 years as a Big Ten Head Linesman and worked the Rose, Sugar and Orange Bowls.

He is survived by his wife, Janis (Youngs) Langhurst, whom he married Dec. 27, 1941; three sons, James Langhurst of Perrysburg, Ohio, Johnny Langhurst of Taunton, Mass., and Jay Langhurst of Willard; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three nieces.                

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Susan (Miller) Langhurst; brother, Charles Langhurst; two sisters, Dorothy Langhurst and Cleone Vogel; and one nephew.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Monday in Secor Funeral Home in Willard. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Grace United Methodist Church in Willard; the Rev. Doug Winner will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Willard.
