Lewis P. 'Chef Lew' Matyok, 72, of Sandusky, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 11, 2008, in Stein Hospice Care Center.
He was born June 17, 1936, in Toledo son of the late Susan (Nagy) and Lewis P. Matyok. He was a graduate of Toledo Macomber High School. Mr. Matyok served in the U.S. Army for five years, earning the rank of staff sergeant as food service manager and chef, serving during the Korean War.
Lewis was an instructor for the EHOVE Culinary Arts Department. He attended Military FoodService in Lenggrees, Germany, and culinary school in Badtos,Germany, and Counsoin, France. He was one of the AmericanCulinary Federation's 2,000 Certified Executive Chefs. He was awarded the coveted Chef of the Year award twice and was honored as President's Medallion winner from the Chef Association.
Lewis served on a number of advisory boards, including the University of Toledo Apprentice Chef program and Penta Career Center Food Service Program. In addition, he served as a certified ice sculpture judge. He founded the Sandusky Bay Chapter of the Chefs Association. He was recently inducted into the Birmingham Hungarian Hall of Fame.
Mr. Matyok is survived by his wife, Margaret S. (Fodos); daughter, Pamela Lewis, Sandusky; son, Lewis P. Matyok, Tiffin; grandchildren, Alexis and Jacob Lewis; sister, Becky (Richard) Thielen, Milbury, Ohio; sister-in-law, Deloris Matyok, Toledo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Robert and Richard Matyok.
Friends will be received 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave.,Sandusky. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday inSt. Stephen United Church ofChrist, 905 E. Perkins Ave.,Sandusky. Burial will be in Ohio Western Reserve NationalCemetery, Rittman, Ohio.
