Douglas A. Franklin, 83, ofVermilion, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, in Stein Hospice in Sandusky, after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 15, 1925 in Detroit and had been a Vermilion resident for more than 50 years. Douglas was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II with the 38th Infantry Division. He worked as a tool-and-die maker for the GM automotive plant in Elyria for 38 years.
Douglas was a member of Henrietta United Methodist Church, Ed O'Brien-Gibson Lodge 301, Wakeman and American Legion Post 397. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, nature and gardening.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Elizabeth L. 'Betty' (Summers) of Vermilion; daughter, Gail (Kevin) M. Peacock of Bellevue; son, Terry (Jennmarie) D. Franklin of San Rafael, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Don, Jennifer, Nick, Joshua, John, Miles, Davis and Arden; and one great-grandchild, Xavier.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Anna (Sanborn) Franklin; and brothers, Chester and Benjamin Franklin.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday in Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South St., Vermilion with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. by Ed O'Brien-Gibson Lodge and veteran honors at7:45 p.m. presented by Vermilion Veteran's Council. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Henrietta United Methodist Church,52148 Ohio 113, Amherst, Ohio;the Rev. Ray Akes will officiate. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
