Wilbert D. Skinn, 93, of Norwalk, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, in Gaymont Nursing Center.

He was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Vermilion, to George and Matilda (Best) Skinn and was a lifelong area resident. Bert was a 1936 graduate of North Fairfield High School and a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving with the 9th Infantry Division in World War II and received three Purple Heart medals.

Bert was a life member of Firelands Post 2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knights of Columbus Council 626, Norwalk, Ohio. He was a charter member of the North Fairfield FFA, past president of the Bronson Norwalk PTA, and a member of the Bronson Norwalk Conservation Club. Bert served on the Bronson Township Board of Appeals from 1969 to 1996 and was a former member of the Ohio Drainage Contractors Association.

Bert was a lifelong farmer and a custom tiling contractor. He was a member of the Huron County and Ohio Farm Bureau, and was a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation since 1959. Bert was a member and past president of the Huron County Cattleman’s Association, a 50 year member and past president of the Ohio Cattleman’s Association, and director of the American National Cattleman’s Association. Bert was one of the first local farmers to join the Soil and Water Conservation program and was the 1980 conservationist of the year.

He is survived by his children, Beatrice (Richard) Barker of Naples, Fla., David Skinn of Chicago, Rebecca Skinn of Norwalk, Darryl and Shannon Skinn of Chicago, and Marcia Summerfield of New London; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and sister, Rose Riedy, of Norwalk.

Bert was preceded in death by his wife, Betty M. Skinn in 2007; brothers, George, John, Ed, James, and Kenneth; and by his sisters, Louise Kautz and Edna Arnold.

Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, August 21, at Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main St., Norwalk, the Rev. Tony Borgia will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery.
