Regina M. Oakes, 55, Sandusky, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.
She was born in Pittsburgh, Nov. 26, 1952. She was the owner and operator of Gina's Daycare for 20 years, she worked in retail management for many years, and as a Head Start teacher for Erie, Huron C.A.C. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren and her daughter who was her best friend, cooking soul food for family gatherings and doing genealogy for her family, tracing family members back to Africa.
Regina is survived by her loving daughter, Carrie Oakes-Walk (Dannie Edmon) of Sandusky; grandchildren, Robert Jermaine Alexander, Jemar Roshad Walk, Re-Jena Bettice Effea Walk and Jhy-Ann Lanesha Emon Walk; brothers and sisters, Daniel (Bernestine) Pettigrew of Willard, Reginald (Ann) Oakes of Washington, Roy Oakes Sr. and Raymond Oakes, both of Sandusky, Robin Oakes and Marlene Reed, both of North Carolina, Robert Reed Jr., Eric Reed, Frances Reed, Ronald Oakes, and Lorena Reed, all of Pittsburgh; blood sisters, Priscilla Jones and Mumtaz Bey, both of Pittsburgh; the grandchildren's father, Darnell Walk; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert "Bobby" and Carrie (Anderson) Oakes; grandparents, Samuel and Lannie (Ford-Hilliard) Anderson, and Charles and Bessie (Brown) Oakes; and uncles, Samuel Anderson Jr., Donald Anderson and Rupert Anderson.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until noon Monday in Meadowlawn Church of Christ, 1109 E. Strub Road, Sandusky, where funeral services will be at 1 p.m.; the Rev. Clyde Mayberry will officiate. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Restland Memorial Park, Monroeville, Pa. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, Sandusky, is handling arrangements.
