Paul H. Pheiffer, 83, of Sandusky and Hilton Head Island, S.C., died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, in University Hospitals in Cleveland.
He was born March 4, 1925, in Sandusky. He was a 1942 graduate of Sandusky High School, and received a B.A. degree in Political Science from Heidelberg College. He was an executive with Kenco Pumps, American Crucible & Dorn Industries in Lorain, from 1950 until his retirement in 1987. He was chairman of the board of Sandusky Bay Development Co., from 1983 to the present, which rehabilitated and operates Battery Park Marina. He was a U. S. Navy veteran serving in WW II.
Paul was a life long member of St. Stephen United Church of Christ. Other memberships included Plum Brook Country Club and the Cotillion Club, the Assembly, the Sandusky Sailing Club, Sandusky Yacht Club, Crew's Nest of Put-in-Bay and Country Club of Hilton Head.
He was past president and chairman of the board of the former Good Samaritan Hospital, now Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, from 1972-84 and continued to serve as trustee emeritus. He was a member of the Citizens Banking Co. board of directors from 1968-2002. He served on the board of directors for the local, regional and national Boy Scouts of America and earned the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope awards. He was also a member of the Ohio Commodores, the former chairman of the Inter Lake Yachting Association and served on the race committee for 38 years. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Heidelberg College.
Paul was a member of the Perseverance Lodge 329, F. & A. M. and the U. S. Power Squadron. He enjoyed spending time on the Intercoastal Waterway traveling to and from Sandusky to his home in Hilton Head and listening to jazz music. One evening Paul had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play the drums with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, sitting in for the regular who was Ill.
He is survived by his daughters, Paula (David) Rengel of Sandusky, Jane Petree of Centerville, Ohio, and Elizabeth Pheiffer of Greenville, S.C.; his son, John Pheiffer of Sandusky; grandchildren, Christopher, Erin and Jennifer Petree, David, Stephen and Andrew Rengel and Caroline, Michelle, and Michael Borkey; sister, Ruth Shanower of Ada, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catharine "C.J." (Dorn) Pheiffer in 2000; his parents, Harry E. and Beatrice (Woelert) Pheiffer; brother, Robert Pheiffer; sister, Martha Morrow; and his son-in-law, David Petree in 2007.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Stephen United Church of Christ. Arrangements are entrusted to Groff Funeral Homes, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky.
