David M. Steinberger, 88, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully late Friday evening, Sept. 5, 2008, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, after a lengthy illness.

He was born June 22, 1920, in Defiance, Ohio, and was a 1940 graduate of Defiance High School He was a veteran of W.W. II having served in the U.S. Army Air Force for five years and was a recipient of a Bronze Star.

For many years he was the top regional sales rep for Gibson Art Company of Cincinnati. He worked at Sandusky Glass Company and was founder/co-owner of Central Glass Company until 1978, when he semi-retired. He then worked for several years for MHD Corp. in their glass shop. In his early years, he was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a scout master.

He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church where he was an usher/greeter for many years and was active in the RCIA and Renew church programs. He was a past member of Sandusky Sailing Club, where he was a crew member on the boat, "Out of Focus." He was also a past member of the Elks Club, IAB Club, Knights of Columbus, and American Legion Post 83. He loved camping and canoeing with his family and friends. Dave just loved being with his family, especially for their birthday and holiday celebrations.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Claraetta "Clare" (Wilson) Steinberger, whom he married Nov. 8, 1943; son, David (Janice) of Marion, Ohio; three daughters, Cynthia Steinberger of Lakewood, Ohio, Susan (Russ) Wumer of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Sharon (Steve) Lichtcsien of Sandusky; eight grandchildren, Todd (Katie) Steinberger, Franz (Michelle) Atschreiter, Claire (Justin Tanner) Atschreiter, Daniel (Ginette) Schmenk, David, James and Katherine Schmenk and Kelsie Lichtcsien; four great-grandchildren, Stefani, Justin and Ryan Steinberger and Aiden Schmenk; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; sister Katherine Veith of Defiance; nephew, Jon (Cathy) Craig; niece, Karen Wassel; and two Yorkshire Terriers, TJ and Mitzi, at home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Alexine (Fyfe) Steinberger; two sisters, Jane Steinberger and Mary (Henry) Craig; and a nephew, Don Wassel.

A Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Marty Nassr will officiate. A "Celebration of Life" luncheon will follow the service in the Gathering Space of the church. Contributions may be made to Sts.
