Ellie Rose (Ging) Schnurr, 89, of Sandusky, died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 30, 2008, in Stein Hospice Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Ogdensburg, N.Y., Ellie and her family moved to Sandusky in 1930 and she graduated from St. Mary High School in 1937. She remained a devoted parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church throughout her life. Ellie was a dedicated homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Active in the community, she baked for many years for the Community Supper Program, worked St. Mary’s bingo for 12 years, and later in life became an eager and constant volunteer for the Ohio Veterans Home. Ellie enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Sandusky Bowling Association for more than 35 years. She was an avid pinnacle player participating in weekly card club with her closest friends. She also spent considerable time in her vegetable garden and was always appreciated for her baking talents.
She is survived by her son, Frank Schnurr, daughter, Sue (Tom) Koch, daughter-in-law, Gloria (Hehl) Schnurr, sister, Etta Smith, and sister-in-law, Rosemary Mantey, all of Sandusky; nine grandchildren (with one more due in September); and 17 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Francis “Bud” Schnurr, in 2003; two sons, Dean Schnurr Sr., in 1982, and Paul Schnurr, in 1962; and her parents, Charles and May (Bouchard) Gingher; and sister, Gloria Ging, in 1988.
Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. David Nuss will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
