Frances J. (Spalla) Desmond, 86, of King of Prussia, Pa., passed away Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, in Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, Pa.
Born in Winona, Minn., March 16, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Salvatore and Vincenzina (Catania) Spalla. Mrs. Desmond was a homemaker and member of Mother of Divine Providence Church in King of Prussia where she volunteered with the Legion of Mary for many years. Frances also volunteered as a troop leader for Girl Scouts of America. Upon completion of her B.S. in Child Development from The Ohio State University, she worked as a probation officer for the Youth Detention Home in Sandusky. Frances was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, always encouraging with praise. She baby-sat many young children in the area and cared for shut-ins of her church. Frances also enjoyed playing cards with her friends and cooking traditional Italian meals,
Surviving are her loving family, including her husband of 58 years, Deiro M. Desmond; two sons, Daryl M. Desmond and his wife, Colleen of Burlington, Mass., and David P. Desmond and his wife, Theresa of Bridgeport, Pa.; two daughters, Virginia A. Pietruszka and her husband, Carl of Harleysville, Pa., and Mary F. Kourakin and her husband, George of Mays Landing, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Shaun, Jason, Amy, Angela, Karen, Stephen, Megan, Michelle and Austin; brother, Anthony J. Spalla of Yonkers, N.Y.; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Salvatore, Mario, Joseph, and Charles Spalla.
Relatives and friends are invited for viewings from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday in The Bacchi-Courtney Funeral Home & Crematory, Ltd, 805 DeKalb St., (Rt. 202) Bridgeport, Pa. and 9-9:50 a.m. Wednesday in Mother of Divine Providence Church, 333 Allendale Road, King of Prussia, where the funeral Mass begins at 10 a.m. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Lower Merion Twp., Pa.
