Richard E. Stanley Sr., 82, of Sandusky, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, Aug. 3, 2008, in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.
He was born Sept. 12, 1925, in Sandusky, and was a 1944 graduate of Sandusky High School. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WW II. Richard was the owner of R. E. Stanley Builders until his retirement in 1991. Prior to this, he had worked for the former E. G. Stanley & Sons Panelized Homes, G. J. Apel Lumber Company, and Stanley Poultry Farms.
He was a member of First Faith Community Church, Sandusky; life member of the Lowell C. Hein Post 2529, VFW; member and past president of the Erie County Home Builders Association; former member of Sandusky Jaycees; and a former Scout Master and Cub Master with Boy Scouts of America. Richard also was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.
He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret "Peg" Atterholt Bell Stanley; three children,: Richard E. Stanley Jr. of Sandusky, Rebecca Sue (James) Berry of Wooster, Ohio, and Daniel G. Stanley of Sandusky; four stepchildren, Stan Bell of Mansfield, Ohio, Gretchen (Alan) Freeman of Maryland, Barbara (Peter) Bell-Muchanus of Chicago and Rebecca Bell of Sandusky; four grandchildren, Nicole Stanley, Adam Stanley, Stuart Stanley and Jon Stanley; one stepgranddaughter, Ashley Freeman; and one brother, Robert Stanley of Sandusky.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susanna Lierenz Stanley in 1994; parents, Ellsworth and Matilda (Apel) Stanley; and one daughter-in-law, Vicki Stanley.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First Faith Community Church, 225 E. Jefferson St., Sandusky. The Rev. Eric Rickel will officiate. Burial will be in Perkins Cemetery.
