NEW YORK CITY
Estella Vance Green, 68, of New York City, departed this plane July 19, 2008, with her family by her side.
She was born Jan. 23, 1940, in Sandusky, daughter of the late Fred and Gertrude Vance. Stella was converted and baptized in Ebenezer Baptist Church, Sandusky, and moved her membership to Bethany Baptist Church while in New York.
After discovering a love for numbers, she attended Pace University in New York and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1974 she was employed by American Standard, a fortune 500 company, and was later appointed Vice President/Comptroller Division of Oil and Gas. She was CEO and founder of Barton, Green and Vance, an accounting firm which she owned for more than 20 years. She received a certificate from the University of Texas in 1983. She was recognized for her youth outreach efforts in 1989 for her support of Help Employ Ambition Teens (HEAT), and twice more in 2002 and 2004.
In 1972 Stella met and married the love of her life, Mark Green, and they celebrated 33 years together prior to his death.
Stella was an avid activist. She leveraged her business as a platform to support the community, including the Fort Green Assoc. where she served as treasurer for more than 20 years. She served on boards and supported civic groups including the Juneteenth and East 10th Street Block Assoc. Even those who knew her were stunned by her determination to participate in her family reunion, organizing from her hospital bed. Even as her health began to fade, she never lost drive and never gave up. We will not forget her remarkable fortitude.
She is survived by her siblings, Frederick Douglas (Shelia) Vance Jr. of Sandusky, William Donald (Dannie) Vance of Florida, Lafayette Vance of Sandusky, James (Ann) Vance of New Jersey, and Joan T. (Clifton) Myers, Ernestine Myers and David (Debra) Vance, all of Sandusky; special nieces, Jacqueline Jones, Teresa Buxton and Donna Dunn; a host of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; Reed/Reid cousins; her business associate and friend, Ardella Lucy; childhood friends, Louise (Stovall) Cunningham and Delores Rice of Sandusky; and devoted faithful friends, Charles and Bonnie Jones of New York City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Gertrude Vance; and sisters, Betty Gant and Edith Ellington.
To honor her passion for educational opportunities, the family requests donations in her memory be made to Vance Scholarship Fund of Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky, OH 44870.
