Paul V. Becker, 77, formerly of Sandusky, passed away early Monday morning, July 28, 2008, in Holy Family Home in Parma, Ohio, after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Omaha, Neb., March 28, 1931. Paul graduated from Henderson State University in Arkansas with a bachelor's degree in music with an organ major, and post-graduate studies at the University of Michigan where he received his master's degree in organ studies. Paul was the recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship in Classical Organ Studies, studying in Vienna, Austria. While attending college he took part in the American Guild of Organists Student Organ Composium, tying for first place in national competition. He received many honors throughout his musical career.
He was director of the Sandusky Chorale Society for 10 years. He was organist and choir director from 1956-81 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sandusky, and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church from 1981-93, Cleveland. Paul was organist from 1995-2003 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cleveland, and at Oheb Shalom Temple, Sandusky, from 1978-2001.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sandusky, and Fourth Degree member of Knights of Columbus Bishop Machebeuf General Assembly. He was a former member of Sandusky Bay Kiwanis.
He is survived by his wife, Clare A. (Yurick) Becker; sons, Stephen (Janine) and Gregory (Christine) Becker; granddaughters, Catherine and Emily Becker; stepchildren, Julian (Traci Bernabale) Neil and Elizabeth (Randy) Hodge; and brothers, Edward Becker and William (Beverly) Becker. Paul was an uncle and wonderful friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marie (Movius) Becker; first wife, Jeanne L. (Sumser) Becker, Oct. 6, 1994; sister, Helen Boring; and stepson, Dennis Dentzer.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday in David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky; the Rev. Philip Feltman will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
