Alice Jo Farkas, 81, of Norwalk, died Friday, July 13, 2012 in the Stein Hospice Inpatient Unit, Sandusky.
She was born Nov. 11, 1930, in Norwalk, daughter of the late Gordon T. and Lois (Long) Stower and was a lifelong area resident. Alice Jo was a 1948 graduate of Milan High School and was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Norwalk, where she was a former Sunday school teacher.
Her passion in life was her love of dance as well as being a loving wife and mother. Alice Jo’s dance career began when she was 3 years old under the instruction of Kay Lutes of Sandusky and continued most of her life. She began giving dance instruction when she was 15 years old at the family farm where she taught three generations of local children and adults ballet, acrobatic dance, ballroom dance and novelty dance. Alice Jo enjoyed taking her students for free dance recitals to many area festivals, including the Cherry Festival and the Milan Melon Festival, and to many area nursing homes. Her love for teaching also included students from the Huron County Children’s Home and Christie Lane School. Alice Jo also enjoyed her adult students and her dance partner Vince Hipp, of Norwalk.
Her creative and decorative abilities also included flower gardening and arranging and decorating her home and dance studio. Alice Jo was an avid collector of antiques and enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions with her friend Mavis Perry.
She was introduced to her late husband Paul L. Farkas by Bill “Red” Lanius, who was employed by Bud Newton at the Norwalk Oldsmobile Garage, at Berry’s Restaurant. Paul preceded her in death in 1989.
Alice Jo is survived by her sons, Jeff, Steven Paul and Eric and her granddaughter Fallon. She is also survived by her sisters, Lois Jean, Carol and Ruth Ann, and several nieces and nephews.
Alice Jo was preceded in death by her brother Bob.
Friends may call 2-6 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 16, at St. Paul Episcopal Church, 87 W. Main St., Norwalk. The Rev. Margaret D’Aneri will officiate. Interment will be in Milan Cemetery.
