Karl Edwin Ailing, 81, of Sandusky, passed into the arms of his Heavenly Father, Sunday afternoon, July 20, 2008, in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 15, 1927, in Strasburg, Ohio, the son of Charles Lester and Jenny Lucille (Mears) Ailing. He graduated from Strasbourg High School in 1945, and attended Kent State University for a year and a half. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in speech and hearing. He earned his Master of Speech Pathology and Psychology from Bowling Green State University in 1956.
Karl was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1945-1951. He was employed by Sandusky City Schools from 1956 until his retirement in 1980, and then owned and operated Sandusky Hearing Aid Center until 2003. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the High 12 Club, Scottish Rite, Gideons International and the Harlequins.
He is survived by his wife, the former Suzanne Terzo, who he married June 11, 1955; two daughters, Holly Sue Ailing and Marianne (John) Webb, both of Sandusky; two sons, Steve Ailing of NewPort Richey, Fla., and Scott (Ray McHale) Ailing of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren, David Ailing, and Jonah and Molly Webb; three stepgrandchildren, Tara Webb, Jessica (Russ) Dickman and Alex Webb; and a great-stepgrandchild.
His parents and a brother, Herbert D. Ailing, preceded him in death.
A Memorial Service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Christ Episcopal Church, 120 Ohio St., Huron; the Rev. Eugene Smercina and the Rev. Carol Fleming will officiate. Inurnment will be in the church’s columbarium. Groff Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
